The Ubiquitous Music conference 2027
International Symposium on Ubiquitous Music
May 10-11 2027 > Porto Seguro, Brazil – Hong Kong + Hybrid
About
The Ubiquitous Music Symposium (UbiMus) (formerly known as the Workshop on Ubiquitous Music) is a symposium that brings together researchers, artists and educators to treat music-making as a primary human activity, supported by networks, small devices, shared rooms and public places.
UbiMus operates in a space between music, computing, education, creativity studies, design and engineering. We welcome research outcomes or work-in-progress proposals, including papers, music, panels, workshops and demos.
Recent meetings have been held in Matosinhos, Curitiba, Derry, Macao and Brandenburg. The official language is English, but both in-person and remote events will support presentations in other languages.
This Years Event
In Brandenburg 2026 we asked three core questions that still hold true:
> How do networked computers, mobile devices and small connected objects change or develop practice around how music is made, shared and heard?
> How do cultural practices shift when these tools are accessible and distributed, rather than tailored for specialists?
> What new avenues emerge as amateurs, students and everyday users utilise the same toolsets and techniques as researchers or professional musicians?
UbiMus 2027 invites work that considers these questions carefully in indoors settings, urban environments, classrooms, and remote and connected perspectives. Maker focussed hardware, ecological practice, improvisation and comprovisation, sonification, domestic setups, and lay–musician collaboration works are all in scope. Web audio is welcome, when it serves this focus; but it is not the primary subject of this years event. Please see the Web Audio Conference for a specific track in this area: https://wac2027.codigo.xyz/
We welcome initial results as well as developed studies, and we welcome performance, composition and artistic outcomes alongside research papers.
